Sam was counting off the number of ways he could screw up his date with Quinn tonight, as well as simultaneously trying to list the things he shouldn't do or say under his breath as he started down her street. "Number one...don't talk about Avatar. She won't know what you're saying if you speak Na'vi. Number two...don't do any impressions unless you really, really think they're funny. Not even if the perfect chance comes up," he whispered to himself, his hands shoved in the back pockets of the old, beat-up Levi's he was wearing. They were about a size too big, but he was pretty sure they were hand-me-down's - one of Finn's old things, he figured; the guy was like a foot taller than him, which would explain why the hem was almost dragging on the ground with every step he took. "Number three - don't talk too much. You'll just sound stupid," Sam continued. It was getting to be about eight or so, a little late to be out on a walk, but hey - it was the most romantic thing he could think of. Streetlight may not have compared to candlelight, but he was kind of on a tight budget here and he figured it would suit Quinn's personality. She'd definitely changed....she might have been complicated in the past, but this time around, she seemed a bit more simplistic. He figured she'd appreciate a little gesture like this - he hoped so, at least - because if just talking was enough for the both of them, then hopefully this would be the perfect chance to catch up.
"Number four - don't trip. Keep your shoes tied," Sam reminded himself, still trying to think of ways to keep himself from screwing up. He subconsciously glanced down at his scuffed Chuck Taylors, laces tied so tight they were practically suffocating his feet. For some reason, whenever he got nervous, he completely lost his cool to the point that his balance was pretty much gone with the wind. The tripping thing was an essential part of making this date run smoothly. After all, what if he was holding her hand? He'd bring Quinn down with him, and that wouldn't just be awkward; it would be a complete trainwreck. Therefore, he absolutely could not allow himself to fall during this date, or he'd ruin everything. "Number five, don't sweat, even if you're nervous. That's just gross," he muttered, wiping his palms on his jeans as he approached the Fabrays' front porch. They had a pretty big house, and lived on one of the weathier ends of town. It didn't bother him, and he wasn't jealous, but it still made him nervous just knowing where he was. He felt completely out of place.
"And number six - be yourself. That's why she likes you, isn't it?" Sam concluded, contradicting all of his other statements. After all, wasn't being clumsy when nervous and speaking Na'vi just part of who he was? He shook his head in response to his thoughts. No, that's just stuff you do that you shouldn't do tonight, or you're going to screw everything up again, he thought cynically, climbing the steps leading to Quinn's front door. He sucked in a long breath of fresh air and held it in his lungs as he rang the doorbell, trying to distract himself from how nervous he was. Rocking on his heels, he held his breath until he quickly exhaled, gasping for air. This is stupid. Chill out, Sam thought, looking up at the night sky, which was the color of velvet, sprinkled with tiny, sparkling stars. It was nothing but clear skies tonight, a perfect view of the constellations. Stargazing probably would have been a million times more romantic, anyways, wouldn't it? Sam reached up and self-consciously ran a hand through his mess of blond hair. The longer he was left waiting, the more anxious he became.

Quinn had tried to prepare everything for tonight beforehand, because otherwise she’d be running around her house like a complete weirdo trying to find everything she needed. She really, really didn’t want to be doing that at all because she always ended up losing something seconds before she needed to leave. So, she had everything she needed already for tonight and it didn’t take her long to get changed and do her hair. The blonde didn’t want to look a mess, because that certainly would not be attractive at all. She’d tried – as much as she could - to just make this night amazing before it actually began, since she still had no idea what they were doing. Sam had been left in charge of that stuff, but Q knew that it’d be something simple and – hopefully – romantic.
She’d felt bad for Sam ever since he’d first told her about his whole families financial situation, that’s why she’d agreed to help him babysit his little brother and sister – Stevie and Stacy. After all, she wanted to help him out, it was her first step toward an apology and she’d been glad that even if they couldn’t date, they could still at least be friends. Although, that seemed like it had been years ago, rather than just a few months. Quinn had to admit that she was glad that junior year was behind her, it’d been hell for the most part. She’d made mistake after mistake, then when she’d tried to fix them made them even worse. She’d been a complete bitch to most people as well, especially Rachel. Sure, she was sorry for that but the blonde couldn’t deny the fact that most of what she’d said had been the truth. Then, people had found out about ‘Lucy Caboosey’ thanks to Lauren, but that didn’t seem to have affected her life as much as she thought it would have and for that, she was grateful.
Although, she was more grateful that everything seemed to be getting better this year and things seemed to be sorting themselves back out. Quinn was determined that this year would be better. That she’d make no stupid mistakes, that she’d try her hardest not to be as bitchy to people and that she wouldn’t let her mind get too caught up in her popularity. Well, that’s what she’d promised Finn and she knew just as well as everyone else did that she couldn’t promise anything there. She’d try though, like always she’d try because she just wanted this year to be one that she could be proud of because she hadn’t had one year that she could actually say she enjoyed so far. The blonde spent most of her years as that ugly, Lucy kid and then, when she’d managed to sort herself out a little bit she got pregnant and then, when she’d gotten over that it turned out that she would make more mistakes than ever. If she was honest, she’d thought about giving up the entire thing and just getting home schooled and at least that way there’d be no more drama. Her parents wouldn’t allow it though, so she had to stick to McKinley.
The blonde was drawn out of her thoughts when she heard the sound of the door bell ringing downstairs. She didn’t want her mom being the first one at the door, so she stood up straight away before shouting “I’ll get it”
and heading downstairs. Quinn quickly slipped on her shoes, before taking a breath and opening the door. A smile spread across her face when she saw Sam stood in his polo shirt and jeans on her door step. Don’t do anything stupid or embarrassing, She thought to herself. “Hey,” She muttered, the smile still on her face as she stepped out of her house and closed the door behind her. Her mom knew she was going out tonight, so she didn’t feel the need to tell her. Instead, she focused on what was happening now and tried not to do anything that would be embarrassing at all. Everything Sam had previously thought faded away when he saw Quinn, leaving him empty-headed and groping for words. She was just as breathtakingly beautiful as she'd always been; pretty enough to leave any straight guy with eyes speechless. It took him a few seconds to remember how to breathe let alone speak, but eventually he managed to choke out, "Hi." His trademark lopsided grin crossed his face as he took in the sight of her. Don't say something stupid, don't say something stupid, he repeated to himself over and over in his head. "Hope you're up for a walk," he said, the grin not leaving his face. He mentally complimented himself on his smoothness as he offered his hand up to Quinn, quickly glancing up at the stars once more in a wordless sort of prayer to whoever or whatever was up there. Please don't let me screw this up, he begged, before smiling again and looking back at Quinn.
Sam had dealt with losing Quinn once, and it hadn't hurt him as much as he had expected it to. For awhile, it stung, knowing that he'd been blown off like that - that a girl could tell you she loved you one day and squash you like a bug the next. It simply hurt, with no explanation at all. How would you explain something like that? There's no way to put that kind of heartbreak into words; Sam was sure of this, since every time he tried to explain what he was feeling to his parents or a concerned friend or Santana (whom he had made the mistake of dating back then, in the midst of his brokenhearted confusion), it felt like every word to come out of his mouth wasn't harsh enough. It felt like he was sugarcoating the pain. There was no way to explain something like that to someone who hadn't felt it before. More than anything, at the time, he remembered wishing that someone would just walk up to him, put a hand on his shoulder, and say, "I know." Knowing that someone felt the way he had during those first few weeks would have helped him more than he could even say.
That was why it was so crucial that he didn't screw this up tonight - he had experienced a lot before finally winning Quinn back. Those first few weeks of heartbreak, along with a week or so of not really being sure if he was feeling anything or not...after all of that, it probably wouldn't make sense to most people that all it had taken was an awkward bathroom conversation to fix everything. But to Sam, it made sense. Really, he had felt as if he was ready to forgive her even before that - all he had wanted was to live it down and finally move on without having to feel that tiny ounce of remorse every time he saw her - but never got the chance. To him, it made sense that he was ready to forgive her in the blink of an eye. The thing that confused even him was that she had returned his feelings for her. Sam had thought she was over it, and that he was the only one still hung up on her. He still found it amazing that he was standing here with her, and he kept expecting someone to pinch him and tell him this was only a dream.
Sam still had a distant smile on his face when he squeezed Quinn's hand and said, "You ready?"

Quinn stood on her porch, the smile never once left her face as she waited for him to reply. Then, when he finally spoke and broke the slight silent gap that there had been, the smile on her face got brighter. It was just because of the way Sam smiled, she hadn’t realized until then just how amazing his smile was. The blonde had missed this, the way everything was so easy with Sam. It just came naturally – to her at least – and she really loved that about them, but she knew that it’d never be quite the same as it was before. Though, she didn’t really care because as long as they were together and she didn’t have to feel that pain and remorse she went through every time she saw his face.
She still didn’t completely understand her own motives for cheating on him with Finn, but she was just glad that she didn’t have to worry about any of that stuff ever again – well, hopefully. After all, she’d made a really bad mistake, but thanks to karma it’d managed to sort itself out and she considered herself the luckiest girl in the world for that. Quinn knew that Sam was such a sweet, nice and romantic guy. He deserved much better than her and girls who were better than she was weren’t that hard to find – even she knew that. So, that was why she didn’t understand why Sam had taken her back, especially after all she’d put him through. The blonde wouldn’t stop blaming herself for it all, not even now they were back together because she knew that it was her fault and she’d do whatever to make it right.
The sound of Sam’s voice brought her back to reality as he mentioned about a walk, which she was totally up for. The blonde automatically thought back to all those romantic, chick flicks she’d watched and how virtually everyone contained some type of romantic walk, whether it was in a park or on the beach or wherever, it was romantic. Although, a million ideas about embarrassing things she might accidently do popped into her head almost automatically. Quinn tried to shake off those thoughts, because she knew if she started worrying then the chance of her doing something stupid would considerably increase. So, instead she kept the bright smile on her face and took his outstretched hand. He squeezed her hand and she couldn’t help but think this was all her imagination, that she’d wake up in the next few seconds and live the same messed up life as before. Although, even if this wasn’t real – she liked it, a lot and was going to enjoy every minute. “Let’s go,” She answered, biting her lip slightly like she usually did when she was really happy.

All the stress seemed to just melt away the minute he was with Quinn. Maybe beforehand he had been a total wreck, counting off the number of ways he could screw this up like he was crazy, but now, it was so easy. Everything was always so simple with Quinn – she didn’t play games like she used to, she didn’t lead him on like Santana had….it was just a million times easier to be around her and feel like none of his smiles or emotions or lame little witty comments were forced. Everything just sort of came naturally. Being with Quinn was almost as second-nature as breathing, and it was just so amazing how everything could just disappear the moment he saw her. It was like nothing mattered anymore but her, like she was the one reason for his existance. He realized how lame it sounded as soon as he thought it, but there was no denying the truth in his words.
“Let’s go,” he heard Quinn say, the same smile he loved to get from her lighting up her already-beautiful face. It was like being transferred out of a dream (his thoughts) back into a dream, because it was so hard to accept that reality could really be this perfect. All he could hope was that if it really was just a mirage or an illusion, that no one would ever wake him up. He didn’t want to ever have to leave this perfect little dream…like, literally, ever. “Awesome,” he said, unable to contain the smile making its way onto his face. Saying ‘awesome’ instead of ‘okay’ was just one of his quirks, so he didn’t feel like he had messed up or said anything weird, even if Quinn did feel that way. All he could think or feel was just how comfortable this was. Having a girlfriend again did sort of feel weird – mostly just the part about being ‘taken’ instead of ‘single’ – but it was worth it to get to be with Quinn. Just the thought that he got to run around telling anyone who asks that he was the boyfriend of Quinn Fabray was enough to put a huge, stupid grin on his face.
Sam started to drift down the short staircase, holding onto Quinn’s hand as far as he could manage before having to let go at the bottom. He crammed one hand in his pocket, and blushed – simply because he couldn’t help it. Cracking another smile, he coaxed gently, “C’mon,” and waited patiently for Quinn to join him on the sidewalk. He felt a little estranged, being so far away from her even for a second, when he knew they were supposed to be going on a date or sorts, but he would wait forever if he had to.

Quinn tried to focus all of her energy on not doing anything completely stupid or embarrassing, but she kept getting distracted by the situation and the guy she was with. She couldn’t help but recognize and remember all of his little quirks, there were so many but they were so cute too. It was sweet how she could remember almost every second of their time together and how much she’d loved every minute, but with all that in her mind it made her feel even more guilty and confused about what she’d done to him. Especially, since she didn’t exactly know her own motives behind it all. The blonde should have been smart enough to realize that there was nothing left between her and Finn anymore, she should have noticed that automatically but she hadn’t. It was such a stupid, silly mistake and when she had been sure she was going to stop whatever was going on between the pair Santana had told Sam about it and boom – he’d hated her.
That was one of the reasons behind her confusion as to why Sam accepted her apology and was actually dating her again. It made the whole situation seem like even more of a dream, like one minute she’d be happy here and the next she’d be transported back to her normal, lonely life. It was a depressing thought, so she pushed that out of her mind and re-focused on the real world – well, what she thought (and hoped) was the real world. Whatever her and Sam were now sharing was amazing, she was sure that she would try her hardest not to make any more mistakes and that this would be a good thing. Quinn really hoped it would last as well, because she was also pretty sure that her heart was almost at the point of collapsing. After all, staples and glue can only hold a heart together for so long, right?
The blonde watched Sam walk down the porch steps, before he coaxed her down as well and she eagerly closed the gap between them. She couldn’t stop her usual, bright smile from appearing as she did so. It was like he actually made her happy, instead of how Finn, Puck and all those other guys had made her feel. Although, she was glad she could still be sort-of friends with the other guys – she was just glad that her heart could belong to Sam.

Sam could tell there that Quinn still felt a tiny pang of guilt - after all, he knew her so well, it was like he could read her mind - for how she had treated him in the past, but he didn't particularly feel like ruining the mood by touching light upon the subject. Instead, he gently held her hand again as they started to drift down the sidewalk, streetlights beating down on them as hot as the sun. He could accept that the past was the past and didn't need to have such a focus on it; that was the way to get depressed in life, and he really didn't want to have to see that happen to himself. That was why he moved on so quickly, and sure, it may have been naive of him, but that was another part of who he was and he didn't want to change it for anything. In fact, he wouldn't even change his mouth anymore; not after the Born This Way lesson in glee club and not after winning Quinn back. Both events had contributed to his newfound self-confidence.
"How've ya been this weekend?" Sam asked conversationally, liking the feeling of genuine curiosity he felt whenever he thought or asked about Quinn. It wasn't as if he cared about her every move or was suspicious of her or anything, but when they were apart, he had a sudden concern about her. It was just because he knew the weight Quinn carried around on her shoulders and since he cared so much about her, he didn't want to see her crack under the pressure when he wasn't around. He was pretty sure she knew that he was always there for her when she needed someone to talk to or just needed a pick-me-up, so he didn't bother saying it when she seemed upset; instead he just did what he always said he would do and listened to whatever it was she needed to say.
Sam glanced down at their intertwined fingers and his face automatically lit up in a smile. He wasn't a big believer in the whole 'sparks' thing, but Quinn was enough to make him believe. Every time they were together it was like something went and electrified him. He sometimes swore he could literally feel the static when their fingers met. He knew it sounded stupid, like something out of those lame romance novels his mom always read after his parents got in a fight, but he couldn't lie about the truth, and if the truth sounded stupid, that was the truth's problem. Not his.

Quinn glanced down at their hands when Sam gently took her hand again, realizing that Sam could probably tell what she was thinking and that was why she tried to steer her mind toward other thoughts instead. The blonde knew that he’d forgiven her and everything and she didn’t want her own emotions getting in the way of a really nice evening, since this was their first ‘official’ date since they got back together. She didn’t want to ruin it at all, because if she did then that would mean that he definitely wouldn’t say yes to the question she was planning on asking him later and she really didn’t want him to say no.
It was about the girls’ choice fall dance, which she was of course attending. Although, she didn’t plan to go alone at all. She knew that they had been trying to keep their relationship from being turned into gossip for the whole school and stuff, but she really wanted to go with Sam and she hoped he’d say yes. If he didn’t...well, she’d just have to go alone and spend her time chatting with Santana and Brittany all night and for some reason, that didn’t sound nearly as fun. Anyway, the rest of the people there would be too busy focusing on themselves to worry about who was going with who, right? She hoped so, because as much as she was the proudest and happiest girl in the world to have Sam as her boyfriend, she also didn’t want everybody gossiping about it and getting on their backs about it all the time.
Though, she’d wait to ask about it because she knew that she couldn’t just ask it now – she wanted it to be special, especially because it was girls’ choice and she wanted to do something right for once. So, she tuned back into the conversation and heard Sam ask about her weekend as they walked under the streetlights that occasionally flickered but gave up a warm glow that lit up the sidewalk. “It’s been okay, although my mom has been annoying me a lot about my school work and chores and stuff – apart from that, good. Yours?” She asked, curious about his weekend too.

"That's good, but sorry that your mom's been bugging you," Sam commented, a slight smile still playing on the edges of his lips. He was always happy to hear that Quinn was doing okay, especially because he knew sometimes she got a little caught up in the past. It was part of the reason for his 'move on' policy - that if something happened long enough ago, that it really didn't matter anymore, so why not just act as if it never happened? "My weekend was the usual - babysitting, trying to get homework done, but I've been good." His smile broke into a full-fledged grin. Really, what he was thinking was that he'd been good ever since the two had started going out again, but he could imagine the silence that the conversation would drift into after her appropriate response of, "Aww, that's sweet," and he didn't like the idea of it one bit. Sometimes, being predictable made things easier.
Sam didn't know how to continue the conversation from there, but he knew whatever he said would be accepted, so he didn't spend much time stressing over it. The thing he was stressing about was the dance this Friday. For girls, it might have been cool to show up dateless with your friends, but for guys, it just meant getting beat up or slushied or generally given crap about it. Basically, at dances, for guys, if you don't bring a date, you're ruled out as gay and tormented for it for the rest of your life. Sam didn't necessarily agree with the way things worked in Guyville - he actually thought it was kind of offensive to people who are actually gay - but it was the way things were, and he didn't want to deal with that kind of crap. But more importantly than the teasing, he wanted Quinn to be his date. He knew they were keeping their relationship a secret for now, but he didn't want to have to hide her for that night at least. They could go back to acting as if it never happened and keeping their feelings hidden after the dance, but just one night where he could be proud to show her off and say, "Quinn's my date," would be more than he could ask for.
The one problem was, Sam was never good at the whole 'asking out' business, and also felt like there was something he was forgetting about the dance, too, which didn't really help with the amount of stress put on him. After all, when all his instincts were screaming, "NO! YOU'RE GONNA LOOK STUPID!" it just made him even more nervous. It was like his stomach was tying itself into knots. Sam cautiously put all those feelings into the musty back corner of his brain before deciding he was going to ask her to go. It might have been a dumb way to start a date - by asking for another date - but he couldn't shake the anticipation and he just wanted to get this over with. "So, um, what are you doing Friday?" It was the one way he knew how to start the question.

Quinn’s attention kept being drawn toward their intertwined fingers and every time she glanced down at them she felt safe and happy. She’d spent so long feeling guilty and horrible about what she’d done to Sam and now she knew that he’d forgiven her she felt better again, sure she still felt guilty and bad about herself occasionally but that wasn’t the point. She finally felt like herself again, which was something only Sam had ever made her feel. Although, when they were apart from each other she did occasionally get the feeling like somehow she was going to screw up again, but she tried not to focus too hard on that because she’d learnt that an optimistic outlook on life was usually the best thing to have. So, she was just grateful that even if she did ruin it all again at least she could have these moments with him.
The blonde’s attention returned to Sam when he replied to her question, the streetlights were still burning above them and made everything seem so much brighter. It was nice to know that he was there for her again; at least she had one shoulder to cry on if she ever needed it. That was another thing Quinn had missed about their relationship, how they knew they could lean on each other and trust each other – until she blew that out of the water, of course. She hoped they could build that trust up again. Although, she knew that Sam was the only person who could tell what she was thinking or feeling, it was just whether he decided to acknowledge it or not. It was the same with herself though, she could tell whether Sam was happy or upset or whatever. That was the reason she knew about Sam’s family and the motel room before anybody else, because she could tell there was something wrong.
Quinn still felt bad for him about that whole situation and she really did want to help him, especially now they were together again. “You’re gonna have to let me come around and help you with the babysitting one night again, it was fun last time and it could give you some time to get your homework done without Stevie and Stacy hassling you all the time.” The blonde replied, smiling up at him. She actually had enjoyed babysitting them last time as strange as it sounded, it had been a good break from her own troubles and at that time she felt so guilty she’d do whatever to make it up to him anyway. She was about to speak again when Sam asked her what she was doing on Friday, she thought again and remembered that was the night of the dance. A smile spread across her face once again “I’m going to the dance, like every other sane person at McKinley...How about you?”
She asked him. It seemed stupid but the last thing she wanted was to ask him to the dance and have him say no because somebody else had already asked. He was an amazing guy and she honestly wouldn’t be surprised if another girl had asked before she got the chance to, but she just didn’t want to hear him say no. So, she thought it’d be better to ask before she asked him to be her date. "Really? 'Cause I'm starting to think you're just doing me favors. No one can possibly like the runts that much," Sam teased, using the word 'runts' a lot more fondly than one would think. Even though they were a lot of responsibility and sometimes it felt more like he was their parent than their big brother, he really did love his little siblings and they were one of the best parts of his life. "And besides, they don't hassle me. They lovingly bother me. And only when I'm trying to get things done. When I'm not busy, they leave me alone." A sarcastic smile spread across his face. He was mostly making fun of the way his siblings only seemed to like to annoy him when it was most inconvenient for him, but he was also trying to get a laugh out of Quinn. He loved making people laugh; especially Quinn. Quinn just had such a pretty laugh; he was always somehow proud of himself when he could get a giggle or two out of her.
Sam knew he was diverging from the actual topic by making his pointless jokes, and he was doing it on purpose. He loved having help sometimes, but he felt like he was forcing responsibility onto Quinn by having her help babysit Stevie and Stacy. He never liked getting help or pity from other people, but he would graciously accept it, and when the time for the help came, he usually ended up loving his free moments. However, the last thing he wanted to make Quinn do was spend her free time watching his little brother and sister when she could be with the Cheerios. Sam was aware that babysitting usually wasn't preferable for most girls - a lot of girls he knew who babysat complained about it a lot, though he'd never heard those kind of complaints from Quinn - so he didn't want to make Quinn feel obliged to help him.
Sam's face broke into a grin when Quinn said she was going to the dance on Friday, and Sam replied, trying to sound calm, "Yeah, me too." With a little clear of his throat, he continued, "So, um, do you want to go to the dance together?" It sounded stupid coming out of his mouth, especially because he still felt like he was forgetting something important - hopefully not an obligation that night or anything that would keep him from going - but he still hoped she wouldn't say no. The last thing he wanted to do was get rejected...especially when they were already on a date. Wouldn't that pretty much be the equivalent of breaking up in that case? Sam almost shuddered at the thought of it; he'd just won Quinn back, so the last thing he wanted was to lose her.

She joked, although it was completely and utterly true. Quinn tried so hard to see the best in her mother, but sometimes Judy just got so stressed out and began nagging and getting angry at everything. So, she knew her mother just needed some space and time to get herself back to normal and Quinn could understand that. After all, she got like that sometimes and it was only fair for them to put up with each other’s angry moments without complaint but spending time with Sam, even if she was just babysitting sounded like a good night. At least this time there would be no awkwardness between them like there had been before, it would be easier. That was when Quinn heard him say that he was going to the dance too, which automatically made her heart sink. So, he already had a date then – great, she thought a little annoyed but tried not to show it. Then, when he spoke again and asked if they should go together her happiness was restored. The blonde knew what her answer was already, but there was one small thing she’d managed to remember after she got over her surge of happiness. “Ermm...Sam?” She muttered, smiling. “Isn’t the theme of the dance Girls’ choice?” She asked, holding back a slight giggle. She had to admit that she loved Sam’s adorable moments when he forgot the most obvious things, it was cute. "Well, I'm not gonna ask you to do anything you don't want to do, but I'm sure the kids would love to see you again...especially Stacy. She really misses being able to do girl stuff with mom when she's gone all day," Sam explained with a shrug of one shoulder. He really hated accepting favors from people - he hated a good pity party more than anything - but if Quinn insisted that she didn't mind, he'd believe her. Plus, he didn't want to deny her the chance to get away from her mom if it was really bothering her. He knew how much he could use a good break sometimes, and no offense to her mom, but he could see why Quinn found her so controlling. His parents were used to trusting him with a lot of responsibility, especially after his parents lost his job and he was stuck watching Stevie and Stacy all the time while his parents went to work or went job hunting, so he couldn't really relate to having restrictions on that type of thing, but he knew that it really bothered Quinn when her mom got upset over the little things or didn't give her enough freedom.
Sam's heart felt like a balloon that had just popped when he heard Quinn say, "Ermmm...Sam?" She was giggling...probably because she was thinking about whatever amazingly attractive guy had most likely already asked her. He just hoped it wasn't Finn or Puck; Sam didn't think he could stand it if that were the case. He'd lost Quinn to Finn once already, and he was still a little skeptical of Puck because of their baby history. He was almost relieved when Quinn continued, "Isn't the theme of the dance Girls' Choice?" but then he realized how stupid he had sounded when he asked her to go with him. Blushing slightly, he couldn't help but want to mentally slap himself in the face for sounding so dump. Sometimes he just really needed to get a clue.
"Oh, right; I knew that," Sam said with a wry half-smile. He didn't know how else he could draw attention away from his dumb mistake other than by acting like it was a complete accident, which it was...so acting wasn't going to be that difficult, now was it? "But I hope you choose me," he joked, his smile spreading into a grin. He knew it was an awful joke but maybe it would make her laugh enough to keep her from mentioning how dumb he sounded and making him feel even more stupid than he already did. The last thing he had wanted to do on this date was screw up and now that he already had, he just wanted to make it through the rest of the date without any more oblivious mistakes.

Quinn’s mind was drifting through her thoughts, yet all of them were about Sam. She’d never actually been this in love with a guy, not even Finn it was weird but she kind of liked it. It was nice to know that he felt the same way about her as well, because she didn’t know if she could take another fairytale without a happy ending. That was her main reason behind telling Rachel last year to stop searching for her own happy ending, because Quinn knew how much it hurt when the story didn’t end the way you wanted it to. Sure, Rachel annoys her quite a lot and Quinn had occasionally felt like punching her in the face but in the end if you thought about it they weren’t all that different. That was the only reason keeping the blonde from hating Rachel, because they were virtually exactly the same and Rachel had occasionally given her some guidance which had helped. So, although most of the time it didn’t seem like it Quinn tried to give the brunette some advice as well.
That was when her thoughts were secured back to reality once again, when Sam said that he hoped Quinn chose him and that almost made her laugh again. “Sam, you’re the hottest, most amazing and adorable guy at McKinley – of course I pick you.”
She replied, smiling at him brightly. “That is only if you really want to go with me? I mean, you don’t have to if you don’t want to, you can go with somebody else...” She added afterwards, because she didn’t want to make Sam go with her if he didn’t want to. After all, that would just make her seem like a forceful, pushy idiot and Quinn didn’t want him thinking she was like that anymore because she wasn’t. She had to admit that her junior year had changed her quite a lot, causing her to take a step back and analyze herself with a fine toothcomb. It had made her realize that her previous popularity addiction had turned her into a complete and utter bitch most of the time, she’d just lost herself in amongst all of the other things that had been going on in her life and she didn’t want to be like that this year. This year was the year a brand new and improved Quinn would roam the hallways of McKinley High School and she was determined to keep it that way. The blonde realized her thoughts were beginning to roam again and she tried to rein them back in, because the last thing she wanted was to fall over or something and embarrass herself completely. After all, who would want to go to a dance an idiot who couldn’t even walk in a straight line? She already knew Sam deserved better than her anyway and she didn’t want to mess up and make that point too obvious. So, she just waited for his reply anxiously hoping with all of her might that it was a yes. Sam gazed up at Quinn for a moment and smiled, saying, "Of course I really want to go with you. Not only because you're the only girl who would ever in a million years want to put up with me, but because I, um...I love you." His smile broke into a grin. "I can't believe I just said that out loud." He'd figured she knew it already, but he hadn't realized until now that he'd never actually said it before; not since they'd dated before, and he knew it was really soon, but he'd been in love with her ever since he met her. It was that simple for him, and that was the difference between this relationship and his other ones - he hadn't had to force himself into thinking he was in love. With Santana, he might have, and maybe with Mercedes he hadn't really liked her all that much, but with Quinn, he'd always been completely certain. There was no other explanation for the way he felt like flying whenever he saw her.
Sam couldn't help but remember how in love with her he'd been the first time around, and he knew exactly why - he'd saw this new Quinn in her even when it wasn't there. She was the first girl to really be nice to him since he moved to McKinley, which probably explained the emotional attachment, but it wasn't why he loved her. He just had always known that there was more to her than the bitchy head cheerleader who walked down the hallways of McKinley acting like she owned them; the only difference now was that he hoped he wasn't the only one who saw that, now that she was a lot nicer and more considerate of other people's feelings.
Then Sam remembered just one tiny little detail and his face fell. Although it sounded like a joke, he was entirely serious when he said, "I'm gonna have to warn you - I can't dance." It was true. He wasn't nearly as bad as Finn was - after all, he'd never broken anyone's nose - but he was pretty terrible. Sam would readily admit that he didn't know how to dance, but he did, at least, know how to act like he knew how to dance. But even that was pretty bad.
