"Thank god for Rory covering my shifts. Half my wage for the hour but it's worth it.
Miki pushed the door to the room open all the way, peeking in and scanning the room. The room was completely empty, only a few scattered chairs and a forgotten notebook lay among the tables. The space between the risers and the black piano seemed expansive. Miki’s yellow converse counted off the steps of one perfect row, leading away from the girl’s bag that had been left resting against a low bookcase. The only windows were the ones at one side of the room, almost filling up the entire wall. Her ipod was quickly connected to a stereo set up by the teacher's desk. It was kind of the Astronomy teacher to lend the room to the Yearbook Club during the afternoons. The club had come to an agreement to cease meetings until the first week of October, due to them needing to catch up on all the summer reading they hadn't done. This left Miki Yashida to organize the several photos she had taken of McKinley teens' summer activities.
On a table nearby there were photos of the Titans, the track team, the Cheerios and several other athletic groups. Mixed in with the different stacks were images of the Drama club's severely disturbing presentation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and the Celibacy club's Promise Ring Ceremony. There were even stills from the A.V Club's homage to Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World which was the epitome of geeky movies (a fact Miki accepted after watching the film more than ten times).
Today the girl had settled for wearing blue leggings underneath a bright red, ruffled skirt (which covered her knees), combined with a black cardigan and black Sketchers running shoes. She'd never admit it out loud, but that brand of shoe happened to be her favorite.
The Asian-American teen took in a deep breath sat on the teacher's desk, feeling free now that classes had ended for the day. All she had to do was wait for everyone to clear out. She could still see students walking by the hallway through the open door, while their heads whizzed by through the window of the other door. For a moment she wondered if one of them would walk by with their head seen through the windowpane. The head would keep by, unseen through the wall and appear by the open door with the expected body unattached. She giggled slightly at the thought, leaning back in the chair and staring up at the Styrofoam ceiling tiles.
Her thoughts always went to the weird side when she was nervous or alone.
“Ok. Time to get these summer pages done. Some Lady G ought to help.”
She pulled at a whiteboard the teacher often had for special presentations and placed it in front of the desk. She drew four vertical lines on it with black marker and gathered some magnetic squares from a nearby storage closet. Each new row on the board was labeled: Neanderthals, Robots, Other Clubs and Others.
She always found that using a simple label like Titans or Cheerios never helped her to focus.
The opening notes of Lady Gaga's 'The Edge of Glory' began to play and Miki turned her attention back to the white board. She moved her hips a bit to the beat as she began to put up photos with little magnetic squares. As the first lyrics rang out, the acoustics of the empty classroom aiding along the way, the girl sang softly underneath her breath. Finding a purely instrumental version was hard and converting it had taken a good hour of online searching (the end result being a file conversion lasting a minute on Youtube Downloader). However, she wasn't practicing to be on American Idol or anything, so the full song was better for her. Listening to Stefani Germanotta (a.k.a the lovely Mother Monster) was a way tor ease the tension of the day.
Even though it was still September, Miki's life was already cluttered up with stuff. So, rearranging some new pages on her spare time was the best way to ease the amount of work she had waiting for her.
“I'm on the edge of glory! and I'm hanging on a moment of truth.”
Her voice grew louder and louder, to the point where it could be heard a bit over the level of the music. It was the good thing about music, just like photography, just like anything that could incite passion in someone. You could get lost in it, lost in the moment of nature’s beauty or in the beat of a song. You could be blind to everything but yourself and while Miki always complained within her head that everyone around her was too critical she often listened to them too much.
Miki spun around picking up a picture of the school's gardening club. Their Summer-Garden project sprouted enough vegetables to fill two and a half barns and Miki debated which pictures to use.
“Put on your shades, 'cause I'll be dancing in the flames! Tonight, yeah, baby!
