David's fidgeting at her statement only provided further proof that she needed to include more tact to her conversations; creeping people out by admitting she could see they hid things wasn't going to help much. At least, as her friend, David would and did understand her ways.
"Your willingness to listen to my crooning doesn't affect your friendship standing with me whatsoever... but I might drop some free meals on you if you do. A way to a person's heart is through the stomach." The girl stretched her legs out a bit, a smile on her face. Her body was aching slightly and it was either from bad sleeping positions or too much work.
"...Thanks, Miki. Really. Thank you."
"...You're welcome. We have about ten minutes left in this lunch hour and I brought some dessert. Care to partake?"
The stereo was turned back on, but the volume was kept a moderate level. Brendon Urie's voice filled the room as the odd tones of Hurricane began. Miki pulled her backpack from underneath a nearby table; it was completely black with golden embroidery and her name stitched tot he side, not that anyone would really know since it was written in kanji. She pulled a pink bento box, which she disliked greatly since her mother bought it for her on a whim; it was completely childish: covered in anime rabbits, stars and hearts, her mother had found it at the local Walmart. Miki pretended to forget it every morning but it would appear in her backpack packed with sweets.
Are you worth your weight in gold? Cause you're behind my eyelids when I'm all alone Hey, stranger, I want you to catch me like a cold. You got both of your guns, when you shoot I think I'd duck.
She opened the box and placed it on the table near David. It was filled with miniature chocolate chip cookies, slices of sweet gummy mandarin candy and two slices of tiramisu. Miki held a plastic fork, which had been covered in a napkin at a corner of the pastry box.
"Any thought to what you're going to sing?" Biting into a gummy mandarin, Miki's head bobbed a bit with the music.
"I let the revolution, in my bedroom and I set all the zippers free!" The girl sang softly between treats.
We said, "No more war, no more clothes! Give me peace. Oh kiss me!"

and i can't sing the blues anymore. but i can sing this song... Well, if Miki was blackmailing him to listen to her sing with food from Sanpuku, she wouldn't need to try too hard. Dave would probably throw himself into a dumpster for some egg rolls. The food at her family's restaurant was just that good. Oddly, he didn't see many people in the place often, probably because Lima was known for its fast food. There wasn't much else in Lima to eat, besides, you know, the Lima Bean coffee cake. Still, she didn't have to bribe him. He enjoyed her company, and if she had his back when he eventually announced his intentions to join Glee club, that'd be enough for him. He smiled. "I will definitely take you up on that. Especially if one of those free meals is okonomiyaki." Dave was seriously addicted to Sanpuku's okonomiyaki.
He thanked her for everything - he didn't realize Miki would give such great advice, even if said advice was going to cause Dave a lot of internal musing - and she said it wasn't a problem. Dave was glad he had a friend like her to support him through things. It was more than he deserved at this point, considering he'd burned almost every bridge he could back in his junior year. The fact that someone wanted him to better himself was enough to make him marvel. But she was right. Somehow, he had to forgive himself for all the madness he inflicted on others. That didn't mean making excuses. The excuse was that he loved Kurt, all-consuming as an excuse could be. He needed to forgive himself for going to such lengths to attract someone who would never want him.
Miki offered some of her dessert. "Of course." He wasn't sure what magic desert would be in her bento box, but it would probably be something delicious. Chocolate mochi, maybe? Dave wished he could cook half as well as Miki's family. As she turned on the radio again, an unfamiliar song filtered through the room. At least it wasn't Adam Lambert again. He watched Miki take out a very juvenile bento box, opening it to reveal an array of sweets. She couldn't eat that much junk food every day? How was she so skinny?! Dave had to work weights for hours if he ate a bag of chips, lest the power of grease somehow make him gain a pound. But gummy candies, those were different, he thought, stealing a few as Miki asked him if he knew what song he was going to sing. He paused.
"Not really," he admitted sheepishly. "I have a few I could sing..." They were very pointedly not traditional love songs. "Mostly older things. Classic rock, you know." He paused while Miki sang a few bars of the song playing in the background. "You planning on singing a song like this?" words 487 lyrics you can close your eyes | james taylor and carole king

"I will definitely take you up on that. Especially if one of those free meals is okonomiyaki."
"That reminds me... I need to make some onigiri for lunch tomorrow... Guess I'll do it after meeting with Riley."
She had a meeting scheduled with him as both their clubs, the Yearbook and AV Clubs, had pushed and pursued them. The two were now in-charge of the year end slide-show that was to be presented at the graduation; unsurprisingly, both clubs had pushed the task on them when they were barely in September. Still, the two had agreed to meet at her place near the end of the month to begin thinking about themes and such. However, with eight to ten months of time left, they would probably be revising their presentation a thousand times until it reached 'perfection' (or the clubs' standard at least).
"We could do a duet... Maybe Snow Patrol?" The girl spoke more to herself than her companion and leaned forward to scroll through the measly 500 songs she had collected. Most of her library was scattered among USBs, hard-disks, albums and old records. "I could sing Florence."
No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone No more calling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in loveFlorence Welch's ghostly song rang softly from the radio and Miki's face grew more and more determined. She swayed slightly with the music, letting herself go. Letting the music sink into her, under her skin, she swore she could feel her heart beating to the rhythm. Florence always spoke to her; her chorus had made her head spin the first time she listened to the album. The instruments were one unit in her mind, but several wavelengths in the air. In that moment, when she let her voice carry out like Florence, Miki decided that would be her song... ...if she followed through with her proposal. It was less of a proposal though and more like a promise. "Well, I'm good on my song selection. You could sing Trade Mistakes but.." Miki looked upwards thoughtfully before closing the lid on the pink, plastic case. "...The lyrics might be too much. The person you're fixating on might read too much into it and you might show too much." She visibly paled for a moment, her left eye twitching. She needed a filter, fast and quick; there was no way she could keep talking out of her mind and not admit some was coming from her as- "That is... if the person you like happens to belong to Glee Club."The clock on the wall ticked, the hands signaling it was a mere four minutes before the next bell would ring. Miki patiently and politely awaited an answer from her friend while she packed up her things. and i can't sing the blues anymore. but i can sing this song... Dave's mentioning food reminded Miki that she should make some onigiri for her meeting with Riley. Dave raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything. He thought he placed Riley - the second baseman on the baseball team who took it upon himself to join every club on campus? Then he recalled the picture Miki had put up earlier, of the nerdy Celibacy Club president, and two and two became four. Dave nodded noncommittally. Yes, Riley was a nerd, but he was not in the business of pointing those things out anymore. Nor did he feel compelled to put people in the dumpster for being a nerd anymore. He didn't know if other teams were taking up the bullying mantle... jeez, Miki was right, Bully Whips wasn't really helping at all. He needed to get his act together and be more of a force for good on campus. Even if that meant forgiving himself for things that were completely unforgivable.
Miki suggested that, for their Glee Club audition, they do a duet. Maybe something by Snow Patrol. Dave wasn't going to admit that he didn't know who that band was, but shrugged. "I haven't even thought of looking at duets. I mean, I know a few older ones off the top of my head, but nothing too... mind-blowing, I guess." He wasn't very up on modern music. It wasn't his thing. He didn't tell New Directions last semester that he had no idea who the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were, and he was out there singing that song. His musical tastes resided firmly in the seventies and eighties. And the occasional comedic Broadway musical. "We could do something from The Book of Mormon." Worst suggestion ever. That would probably end horribly. Especially if they sang 'Baptize Me'. "Scratch that, that might be the worst idea I've ever had." Besides stalking Kurt, but...
Miki thought about singing something by someone named Florence, who she then put on. She had a strange gothic feel to her lyrics, something that Miki could probably pull off easily with her smooth voice. Dave would never be able to sing something like that, mostly because he was a baritone and that woman's voice was slowly climbing into the stratosphere. With a determined look on her face, Miki began to sway back and forth, singing along to the music, confirming Dave's suspicions that she would be perfect for the song. She let the music completely invade her. It was perfect. So much for them singing a duet. Maybe Dave could take over piano duty for Brad if she tried out - no. That would be her moment. They would accept her in that moment. He needed to find a song like that for himself, one that didn't involve romance or violence or anything that was common in about 95% of all songs ever written. Dave didn't look forward to the task.
Dave listened as Miki sat back down, saying that he could sing Trade Secrets (again, what the hell was that song?), but it might make the person he was fixating on, wherever they may be, a little leery. It might show too much. Dave didn't know what the song was so he didn't think too much of it, until -
"That is... if the person you like happens to belong to Glee Club."
Dave felt the air get sucked out of his lungs as Miki, calmly, oblivious to what she'd just pinpointed, began to pack up her lunch things, waiting for an answer that he couldn't give. Or couldn't fully give. That would be the end of his life as he knew it. Miki wasn't dumb, she probably thought, like everyone else in this stupid school, that he was a homophobe, a jerkass. The truth was so much worse, though. You don't abuse the people you love. It's not how love works. But there was no other way to get Kurt's attention. Dave stared at his feet for a second.
"It doesn't matter," Dave finally settled on. "They'll never see me like that." Wasn't that the truth. "I can't sing a love song. They'll think it's for them. And they won't be pleased." Also the truth. He could imagine Kurt's consternating, mildly annoyed face perfectly, and the snarky words that'd tumble from his mouth the minute no one was around. words too lazy to check XD lyrics you can close your eyes | james taylor and carole king

"You can tell me when you're ready... or not." Although, the fact that he had divulged so much already had affected her in more ways than she had originally imagined.
She hadn't seen this happening, the forming of a friendship with a boy who was confused on so many different levels. It was weird in the view of regular, normal society but to her it was weird how the relationship between them struck up. Either way, there was no changing it now; she wouldn't change it anyways. It was making her open up more; it was becoming a doorway to let the girl she showed her family (and her family at Sanpaku) reach out.
"Then you can sing about yourself or about life or something else. By the way, David-"
She had already reached the door, her backpack strapped tightly against her shoulders. She was fixing the hems of her brown sweater with her left hand, while her right hand secured a large pair of headphones around her neck. The bell rang and she let her words stop as the hustle and bustle of students began crowding the hallways.
"-In life you might not end up with what you want, but you'll most certainly get what you need. I mean, you have my support when you needed it, right?" Her voice was playful, which masked the expression of worry on her face as she looked out into the hallway.
"This person, your life, the future... Just step away from it for a few moments and the answers will come to you little by little. As you know, Sanpaku's doors are always open to you."
She was never one for goodbyes, not even a 'see you later'. Those words, of parting, always made her uncomfortable so she often settled for a wave of the hand or some words of personal wisdom. After she gave her friend her own thoughts, she let herself be consumed by the mass of moving students in the hallway.
Moving against the crowd, heading towards her Chemistry Class, Miki became just another head in the crowd.
