Sam's mind was ultimately in a jumble. His first period class had been Algebra, his second English, and he still felt like his head was swimming in an ocean of words and numbers. All he could think was a combination of equations and "classic lines from novels of previous generations," whatever that meant. Luckily, glee club was next and after that, only one more class until lunch, when his brain could get a moment's rest at least. Being dyslexic, he knew he needed whatever time he could get before having to deal with more numbers, letters, and, his least favorite of all, reading.
Sam blinked a couple times, trying to shake the thoughts out of his head. Before long, he found himself standing in front of his locker and began to fiddle with the combination lock. 24, 3, 17... He carefully moved the dial to the last number of his combination before yanking it. It wouldn't budge. He repeated the same combination three times and it still wouldn't unlock. Finally, he gave up and pulled a paperclip from his back pocket, unbending it and prying at the keyhole in the back. With a click, it unlocked. Sam jammed his books into his already-disorganized locker, his pencil in his mouth. Sighing, he slammed the locker door and turned to join the sea of people in the hallway.
McKinley High's hallways were a dangerous territory, jocks shoving kids up against lockers and slushies being thrown left and right. Sam was surprised that anyone could even keep their balance walking through this jungle of a hallway. He was starting to get his hopes up about getting safely to glee club when a big football player came up behind him and poured an icy blueberry slushie over his head. Cold blue slush ran down his shirt and onto his sneakers. Sam was too stunned to hear the snarky comment from the guy who had slushied him. There he was, standing in the middle of the hallway, motionless as a rock, with flavored ice in his pants. Sam was sure he looked ridiculous. While he wiped the slush out of his eyes, he felt a jerk on his arm. Either someone had walked into him or was tugging him in another direction, and he had no idea who or why.

Quinn hadn’t had a very good morning so far, she’d had boring lesson after boring lesson. The blonde never liked lessons, apart from the ones she was good at and she was definitely not good at Geography or Biology. So, she’d been bored to death and tuned out through most of the morning classes. She’d spent the most part of it angrily tapping her pen on the desk, watching the small hands on the clock tick by slowly like they were mocking her by making every second longer. Q couldn’t wait until she was old enough to leave this hell hole and move onto college, at least then she could start a fresh page. She hoped to go to a college in California or somewhere away from here, somewhere where nobody knew her and the mistakes she’d made at high school. It’d be better and she could put all the high school drama behind her, which would definitely be a good thing. That was literally the only part of her life she wanted to forget – high school – the drama, the gossipers, the torture, everything! Though, she doubted she’d ever forget any of it but she hoped she would.
The blonde was deep in thought - thinking about her future – when the bell rung, signalling the end of second period. Quinn let out a small sigh of relief, before smiling and grabbing her books. She left with haste, heading toward her locker were she slung her books inside and then started walking toward the choir room for Glee Club. This was the only part of the day she was looking forward to, because it was one of the only places in school where she felt accepted. As soon as she’d returned to school she’d been tormented by the football players, Sue and all the other popular kids. She hated the fact that she wasn’t popular anymore, without the safety of a Cheerio’s uniform she felt too exposed. So, she’d made up her mind that she was going to get back on that squad and back in that uniform but not yet. She needed time to plan how she could possibly convince – or blackmail – Sue to let her back on the team because she knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task.
As she was walking, deep in thought once again but more focused on how she was going to get back into her old uniform. She didn’t notice until too late that one of the footballers was heading toward her, slushie cup in hand. “Holding onto someone else’s eggo, preggo?” Karofsky said, not even hesitating before he hurled the purple ice at her face. It dripped down her face, neck and hair staining her brand new dress. She’d had enough of that guy! The blonde turned around, after removing the purple drink from her eyes, ready to give him a proper slap in the face. That’s when she noticed that Azimo had just slushied someone as well. Those guys were seriously out of line, she was going to make sure they suffered just as much as the Glee Club kids had. Though, it would have to wait while she got cleaned up.
Quinn walked over to the other guy, who’d just stood there letting the ice drip down his back. She rolled her eyes, grabbing the guys arm and pulling him with her after checking there was no one in the girls’ bathroom. The blonde pulled him in with her, and then shut the door behind them. The girls bathroom was safer then the guys’. Hardly any of the girls actually came in because the toilets at McKinley weren’t all that great. So, this would probably be the better place to get cleaned up. She turned back around when the door closed, that’s when she noticed it was Sam. Her heart faltered in her chest, beating much more rapidly but she tried not to show it. “Ermm... sorry about that, it’s just you didn’t look that cool standing in the hallway covered in blue gunk.” Quinn muttered, awkwardly. She tried not to show her embarrassment, but couldn’t. Her cheeks went a light rosy pink color and she’d completely forgotten about the purple gunk that she was covered in.

It didn't take long for Sam to realize that he was being pulled towards the girls' bathroom, which was mortifying beyond belief. After all, he was a guy, and guys just didn't belong in the girls' bathroom...unless they were Kurt, that is. Before he could open his mouth to protest, they were standing in the middle of the bathroom, which was (luckily) empty. He strongly considered running out the door and trying to find a sink in the guys' bathroom, but then he noticed who had grabbed him: Quinn Fabray. Sam gritted his teeth to keep himself from saying anything stupid. He had a bit of a history with Quinn, and it hadn't ended well. Part of him was simply angry, but part of him wanted to make things right. Either way, things were getting complicated, and this could no longer be solved by running in the opposite direction.
"It's just that you didn't look cool standing in the hallway covered in blue gunk," was all that Sam caught, though he was sure that there had been more than that said. There certainly was plenty enough to be said, though he didn't know where to start. "Uhh..." Sam said awesomely, probably sounding like he was the smoothest guy in the world. Yeah, not really. After standing there for a moment, awkwardly rocking on his heels, he finally swallowed the lump in his throat and was able to say something intelligible. "You don't look so good yourself," he said, then mentally facepalmed himself when he realized how dumb that had sounded. "I mean, you look fine, but you're covered in purple slush. Did he get you, too?" Sam quickly amended, with a slight sigh of relief that he hoped Quinn hadn't heard.
Sam stared at the ground, his palms sweating nervously. He wasn't sure where to go from there, so instead of saying anything, he grabbed a paper towel and wet it in the sink. Glancing down at his shirt (which just happened to be white; just his luck), he started to dab at the blue slush on his chest. For some odd reason, this reminded him of the first time he had been slushied. Quinn had been there, too, but things had been different back then - less awkward. Back then, Sam was the new kid that somehow managed to land himself a spot on the football team. He was the kid that had just joined glee club and was no longer good enough for everyone else. But he'd been good enough for her, at least. Sam sneaked a glance at Quinn out of the corner of his eye and wondered why he'd let her go....oh, right. She'd cheated on him with Finn, he recalled.

Quinn watched him; the rosy pink of her cheeks had faded and become just a slight blush. Though, it was hardly noticeable under the purple liquid that was still dripping down her back. She could feel the embarrassment of the moment, but she couldn’t tell whether it was because Sam was here or because she had just been slushied. The blonde didn’t want to admit that it was option one, she didn’t want to admit she still had feelings for Sam because she was scared of the pain she’d feel everyday if she did tell anyone how she felt. It would probably be more pain then it was worth, she knew that it would be a miracle if Sam actually still liked her too and she didn’t want to believe in false hope. Although, she had admitted it to herself quite a while ago. After Finn broke up with her and she’d managed to get over him, she realized just how much of a mistake she’d made by cheating on Sam. Sam had understood her; he’d loved her and accepted her more than any other boy had before. Though, she knew that this sudden realization was too late. She’d messed things up really badly, of course Quinn wanted to put it right but she didn’t know how. After all, Sam would probably never forgive her for what she’d done.
Though, the blonde knew her feelings for the boy were true and honest. It had been a spare-of-the-moment, silly mistake but it was one she could never take back. That’s when Sam’s voice interrupted her own deep thoughts and brought her back to reality. He reminded her about the purple ice that had now almost all melted and was beginning to make her dress quite clingy. Quinn quickly ran over and grabbed herself a paper towel, wiping down her dress trying to get off as much as she could but she knew her dress was already stained. “Yeah, I’m seriously gonna get revenge on them someday!” She replied, her annoyance showing in her voice. She quickly glanced at Sam, before returning her gaze to the sink below her. She thought back to the time they met, which was very much like it was right now. Apart from the fact that back then, she hadn’t made the biggest mistake ever and everything was a lot more natural and relaxed. She regretted that mistake now more than ever, letting out a quiet sigh and hoping Sam hadn’t heard it. He’d been so sweet and kind towards her and she’d blown it.
Quinn didn’t even realize she was wearing the promise ring he’d given her last year, now. She’d put it back on after Finn had dumped her, but she didn’t even see it on her finger as she wiped away more of the slush that was all over her. It’d been so easy before any of this, like they were meant to be. The blonde rubbed at her hair, trying to shove the thought out of her mind because she knew if she kept thinking about it she’d just start crying or embarrass herself even more. So, she kept quiet and tried to focus on the gunk that was beginning to make her hair stick together.

Sam could just feel the tension creeping into the room, hanging idle and heavy in the air. Part of him felt bad for Quinn, standing there, trying to get the sticky purple slush out of her hair. Maybe it was that she suddenly seemed less like the girl who had hurt him last year, and more vulnerable, more like she had seemed when they had first met. Yet again, a more bitter part of him thought, she didn't really deserve his pity. Sam was very well aware of this, yet it didn't change the fact that all he could do was stand there and look stupid, torn between his own thoughts and feelings. However, the chivalrous knight inside of him soon took over.
"Um...do you....I mean....here," Sam said, letting out a little sigh of relief at finally managing to choke out some words, even if they made him sound a bit illiterate. He was almost surprised that his body was doing what his brain told it to, since he had been frozen stiff just a few minutes ago. Sam pulled a paper towel off the roll, wet it under the sink, and awkwardly stood there for a moment before gently trying to help Quinn. After all, he would have felt awful if he had just abandoned her there, or ignored her, and had to see her with purple hair later in the day. Sam held onto a small piece of her hair, the grape flavoring making the blond strands stick together, and tried to get some of the slushie out. For a moment, he was entirely silent; there were no thoughts at all coursing through his mind, and his movements made no noise at all, like he was a ninja or something. Then he realized how strange this was, that he was trying to help her - and that he was in such close contact with her.
"Er....sorry," Sam mumbled quickly, startling himself with the way he quickly jumped back. "I didn't mean to make that weird for you, or anything, I just....you looked like you could use help." Sam stood there for a moment, staring at Quinn and trying to detect any emotion at all. Eventually, he looked down again and stared at his blue-stained sneakers. He was sure there was probably slush in at least one of his socks, but he didn't want to check, because he knew he would laugh if this were the case. Now really didn't seem like a good opportunity for laughing. In fact, now probably wasn't a good time for the real reason he had stuck around so long, he realized. Not that Sam would get an answer as to what had really happened between the two of them if he asked. The blond simply bit his lip and started trying to comb the blueberry slushie out of his bangs.

Quinn was so embarrassed when she noticed Sam looking at her, the blonde could only guess what he was thinking and all her guesses were extremely bad. She couldn’t even begin to imagine how she must look through his eyes, covered in slush with her purple hair and her dress all stained. She felt so bad; after all she was completely and utterly messed up right now. It felt like she had nobody to lean on, like when she was back at Bellville. She laughed at the comparison; she’d changed so much since then but still sometimes managed to feel just as much of a loser as she had back then. She hated feeling like a loser, because she’d spent forever trying to find a way out of that episode of herself and being reminded of that time was like she was reliving it.
That’s when Sam spoke once again, which made her smile slightly. His voice took her back to a time before anyone knew about “Lucy Caboosey”, when she hadn’t made that mistake with Sam. So, when he approached her and began helping her it was like she was a junior again. Her heart began racing in her chest and she didn’t know whether she wanted him that close or whether she’d prefare him to be away from her. Then, when he jumped back she realized that she actually liked the closeness between them. “It’s okay...” She muttered, her lips pulling up at the corners slightly. “Thanks.” She added, before carrying on cleaning her hair again.
Quinn took a quick look back at Sam, seeing him trying to clean his own bangs. The blonde giggled slightly to herself, before putting down her own paper towel and grabbing a clean one. She wet it under the sink, and then walked over to him. She lifted her hand and began helping him this time, the ice that was left dripped onto the paper towel. Q couldn’t help letting her eyes drift around, thats when their eyes met. The air of awkwardness between them seemed to evaporate and turn into something else that she couldn’t put her finger on. She felt like she should look away, but simply couldn’t. “I...I’m so sorry.” Quinn apologized, before realizing just what she’d said. She'd just apologized for everything last year and that was an extremely dangerous move to make.
The blonde automatically look away from the boy, her cheeks burning an even bright red then before. She took a couple of steps away, turning to face the other direction. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. She thought feeling so well...stupid. Why’d she said that? That was a big mistake and she knew it, because she knew what would come next. Sam would simply just deny her apology and she would’ve made a complete fool of herself. Though that was just what she thought would happen.

Sam felt his cheeks grow hot as the distance between them was closed again, this time for Quinn to return his favor. If anything good had come out of this closeness that he could think of, it was that the blue finally seemed to be coming out. Perhaps this was simply karma being karma, fate trying to show him that he couldn't do everything by himself; that perhaps he still needed Quinn. But that had been a long time ago, before things had ended between them and while he still felt like he could trust her. Now, he wasn't sure. Feeling estranged, Sam began to shift his weight from foot to foot, unnervingly aware of Quinn's body heat. Having someone near him was comforting, he soon decided, but in light of the current situation, he simply wasn't sure what to think. Hell, he wasn't sure what to think or feel about anything in this time or place, because things were getting weird fast.
Sam's eyes finally left the tile floor of the girls' bathroom, and met Quinn's hazel ones. In that single moment, all the tension seemed to creep back down the drain and the feeling in him shifted into something new and different, yet still familiar somehow. The feeling reminded him of the first time he and Quinn had met, in a situation similar to this one, only without the strained conversation and unfortunate history. It was the first time he'd ever been hit with a slushie - a better flavor than the one he'd been hit with today, too - and this made Sam realize how little he had changed since last year, his sophomore year, because when he'd been slushied today, he'd done the exact same thing as before: he'd stood there in the middle of the hallway, unmoving and looking like an idiot.
"I'm so sorry," Quinn apologized, bringing him back to reality. He wasn't surprised exactly, and if he was, it was only by the earnest look on her face. In a way, Sam knew that this would be coming one way or another. "Why would you be....oh," he began to answer at first, eager to get away from the subject as quickly as possible. But he knew there was only one word left to say. "Why?" Sam asked. He wasn't referring to why she was sorry, because he knew that - what Sam meant was, why had she done it? What would make her hurt him like that, because even if he didn't want to admit it, she had hurt him. Yet despite that, his feelings for her hadn't really changed in the past year, not even when he had been dating Santana or danced with Mercedes at prom.

Quinn stayed facing the other direction; she didn’t dare to actually look at him. Why’d she said that? Why’d she been so stupid?! The blonde was annoyed and angry, but with herself and no-one else. She’d actually just broken down a wall that she’d spent ages building, now she had to clean up the mess. She wished she could just shrink down into a ball and disappear or rewind time and pretend this had never happened; both of those options were good, but none of them were possible. So, she sighed and folded her arms loosely over her chest. Her eyes never strayed once from her cream (and now purple) ballet flats, not even daring to look up either. She hurt now more than she ever had before and she couldn’t help but think what it would be like if she’d never cheated on him. If she’d done the smart, sensible thing and stayed with the person she loved instead of getting caught up in the moment and drama with Finn.
The blonde hoped Sam hadn’t heard her or he would at least pretend he hadn’t, but that was a stupid thing to hope for. She knew that, how could he possibly pretend not to hear her. Though, she wanted to hold onto the false hope, after all it was better than having no hope at all. That’s when he asked “Why?” and her breath caught in her throat, making her feel so much regret for it that she had to blink back the tears that had began pooling in her eyes. Quinn began to think of the answer to her question and that just made her feel even more resentment for herself and what she’d done. “I...I don’t know.” She answered her eyes still on her shoes. The blonde tried to stop her sadness showing in her voice, but she couldn’t hold all of it back. Though, she did manage to keep the tears at bay which was at least one good thing.
The only reason it upset her so much was because the answer she gave Sam was the truth and nothing but the truth. She honestly didn’t know why she’d been so naive and stupid, which made her feel like the mistake was even worse than it already was. Quinn had simply just got carried away and acted like an idiot, because at the time it felt real even when it wasn’t.

Sam could tell that he had upset Quinn in some way, whether it had been by taking her apology in the wrong light or just by making her feel fed up with him or herself. Instantly, he felt a strong pang of guilt in his chest at upsetting her. He always felt guilty after visibly hurting someone's feelings, but this time was different. Now it was as if the guilt was as heavy on his shoulders as carrying the sky would have been for that titan...what was his name? Sam couldn't remember and didn't want to bother with it just now. It didn't matter at the moment, and he wasn't sure that it had ever mattered. Not to him, at least.
A lump formed in Sam's throat as he went around and placed his hands on Quinn's shoulders. "Hey...I'm sorry. You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to. Just don't look like that, okay? Put a smile on. I'll feel a lot better if you do," he said, trying to be reassuring like in the old days when he had once been her boyfriend. Realizing that he was no longer in the position to act like this, he removed his hands from her shoulders, blushing a deep crimson, and muttered his apology. I'm screwing everything up... he thought pessimistically, staring down at the ground again because he couldn't bear to meet Quinn's gaze.
Sam felt even worse when he could hear the honesty in Quinn's voice when she said, "I don't know." It was rather stupid of him to ask that question in the first place, the blond thought. After all, people make mistakes that they're not proud of, and when they look back, they can't do anything but wonder why they were so careless.... Sam had only felt like this once, after dumping a girl when he was a freshman, something he had done without a second thought. He had felt cold and heartless, and remembering this made him suddenly understand why he had to be more sensitive toward Quinn. "I...I'm sorry, too. I shouldn't have asked," Sam mumbled, gulping back the lump in his throat. He wasn't sure why, but he could feel his eyes watering slightly. He dug his fingernail into his palm, hoping that the pain would keep him from bursting into tears. He'd only cried once before, when his emotions had been too much to keep to himself, and wasn't about to let it happen again.

Quinn couldn’t stop the blush, or the feeling of stupidity that was circling around her mind like a boomerang. She’d just made one of the biggest mistakes ever, one she’d worked so hard to keep inside because she didn’t want it out there. Then, she just goes and blows it all. If she could, she would’ve started banging her head against the wall multiple times like they did in the movies. To be honest, it felt like her life was a movie right now. One of those stupid films that started off quite good and just got worse and worse as it went along. She just wanted to act like this never happened or something like that, then maybe she wouldn’t be so stupid in future. Though, that was an impossible suggestion and one which could never actually happen because after the history her and Sam have, you wouldn’t ignore someone when they apologized.
That’s when Sam walked to the front of her, which made her blush even brighter as he placed his hands on her shoulder. The blonde wanted to turn away again, but just couldn’t. Although she was close to tears, his touch was actually quite reassuring. She tried to push that thought to the back of her mind, but Sam’s voice stopped her and drew her focus. “Hey...I'm sorry. You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to. Just don't look like that, okay? Put a smile on. I'll feel a lot better if you do,” He’d said, which was also reassuring to her. Though, Quinn didn’t know whether she should hold onto the little bit of hope that he’d given her, or whether to just let it go and save herself the pain when it was taken away. She held onto it, not caring about the consequences that might follow. She wanted to at least believe that he might accept her apology, rather than just hating her for the rest of his life. Though, she wasn’t sure if she could actually find the will to even smile a little after how much hurt there was in her. She tried anyway, for him and she only managed to pull her lips up slightly at the corners. Then, she let the ‘smile’ go because it wasn’t exactly the best smile ever, she probably looked like a sad clown more than anything else and that wasn’t good.
“I...I'm sorry, too. I shouldn't have asked” He then apologized again and for the first time since her own apology her eyes drifted from her feet and back up slightly. “Why are you apologizing? You haven’t done anything wrong.” The blonde muttered, looking at him but not in the eye because she didn’t want to meet his gaze. She was afraid of what he might think about her, or what he might feel about her because all of her guesses – like his thoughts had been – were very bad. “I’m the one who should be apologizing...again.” She added, pushing her blonde – and purple – fringe out of her eyes.

"Why are you apologizing? You haven't done anything wrong." Sam mentally smacked himself and stammered in an attempt to explain, "Um, you seemed like you were upset and I thought maybe I'd said something..." God, now he just sounded even more stupid than he had before! Maybe he should shut up and actually think before speaking from now on. Sam ducked his head, staring at an ant crawling along the bathroom floor, hoping it wouldn't drown in the tiny puddle of water beneath the paper towel dispenser. Seeing this reminded him of the slushie dripping down his back, though he didn't do anything about it. He'd lived through a lot worse than this and could deal with it, if only for a minute. Maybe if he was lucky the nurse would let him call home for a change of clothes or something....not that anyone would be home. He'd have to fake the phone call and then walk there. At least that would get him out of a good hour or so of class....
Class! Glee club! Sam realized that he and Quinn were both missing glee club. Maybe they should at least start heading in that direction? Sam glanced up at Quinn. She still looked....not upset exactly, but still vulnerable. Sam recognized the look on her face - the same look he had when he had broken up with her, after finding out about Finn. It was kind of a lost puppy dog look, one that you couldn't help but feel sorry for. Which got him thinking about her apologies, and even though he knew she didn't deserve his forgiveness (in a logical world, at least), he realized he wasn't really angry about what had happened anymore. Just sorry that it had happened, sorry that it had ended things between them on such a bad note. Sorry that it had ended things between them at all.
"Apology accepted," Sam murmured with a slight smile. Trying to meet Quinn's gaze, the blond's eyes wandered a bit, but he soon realized that she was avoiding having to look him in the eyes. He didn't blame her for being scared of what she might find, since he wasn't completely sure if his expression matched what he was feeling or not. Actually, Sam felt rather numb, as if he wasn't aware of anything his body was doing, only of what he was thinking. It was a feeling of disconnection, but strangely enough, he didn't mind it. All he was focused on right now was trying to fix whatever had happened here.

Quinn had managed to stop any more tears forming in his eyes; instead she now just had the sadness that was inside. That was better, keeping it inside rather than letting it out. Her parents had raised her that way, if you didn’t speak or show a problem it didn’t exist. Though, this did exist and it was happening now. She couldn’t do anything about that no matter how much she wanted to, which was actually not as much as she thought it was. The blonde actually liked that Sam was here, that he’d actually tried to reassure her. It felt like maybe they could get over at least some of their problems, which would be better than nothing. After all, the awkwardness had begun to creep back into the air slightly and she didn’t want it to return.
So, she actually tried to look at him but failed. The blonde still didn’t dare to meet his gaze, because one look could say so much and she was scared of what actually might happen. “Um, you seemed like you were upset and I thought maybe I'd said something..." Sam said, making her feel bad for well, making him feel bad. The last thing she wanted was to make someone else feel bad, though that was kind of a lost cause with Sam. She’d hurt him bad and she did regret it, she’d never meant to hurt him that bad. Quinn had just got a little bit – well, really – caught up in the moment with Finn and she shouldn’t have let it get that far. It was stupid, silly and a horrible mistake.
That’s when he spoke again and as soon as he said those two little words her breath automatically caught in her throat. She must’ve been dreaming, because there’s no way that he could actually be saying that. It was crazy, like he could actually say that. The blonde always knew Sam was a good guy, but she didn’t know he was that good. "Apology accepted" He’d said, which was absolutely the last thing she’d expected to hear him say. After all, what she’d done to him was horrible and she shouldn’t have done it. If she was him, she wouldn’t have accepted the apology. Quinn tried to choke out some words, but failed. “T...Thank you.” She muttered, just managing to get them out after a few silent minutes of trying. That’s when she realized just what she’d thrown away, and it made her feel even worse. He’d actually managed to forgive her after all that she’d done and that amazed her.

"Thank you," Quinn had managed to stutter in response to Sam's acceptance. How was it that they had managed to communicate so much in so few words, he wondered. Sam couldn't recall an actual mention of what had happened, which was good - he was okay with not having to bring up the actual subject - but in other ways, he thought it was probably a bad thing when they couldn't actually confront what had really happened. Had this really been the problem all along? Before Quinn had cheated on him - that they couldn't talk to each other? Sam couldn't really recall another time like this one, though. Had there been a time where they had avoided their problems?
"Why aren't we talking about this?" Sam wondered under his breath. Oh, damn...had he really said that out loud? He was sure that he was blushing madly, sending all hope that Quinn hadn't heard what he had said or at least noticed that something had happened down the drain. Sam stared at the floor again, drumming his fingers on the side of his leg. He strongly considered pulling a, "Wow, look at the time - gotta get going!" move, but he figured that would only make things worse. Who was he to be talking about not really confronting the problem, only to book it once he had actually stated this fact? And so he forced himself to stand there, feeling as awkward as ever, and hope that something good would come out of his little slip-up.
I could make up some excuse, Sam thought, but the best excuse that he had was the truth - that he had been thinking and simply said what he was thinking. But everyone knows that you're always supposed to avoid the truth in these types of situations. And so the blond ended up muttering some sort of apology along the lines of, "Oh, uh, sorry, I was thinking and...well, yeah....I don't know. Feel free to ignore whatever I just said a few seconds ago." He tried to force a little half-smile to go along with his lame excuse for an excuse. Well, if she hadn't noticed that he had said something wrong before, she most certainly had noticed now. It would be impossible to ignore something like that after he had so frantically stumbled over a stupid little speech like that. All I had to say was, 'Whoops, sorry,' Sam thought, exasperated with himself. He wished he could sink into the floor right about now.

Quinn looked back down at the floor beneath them, feeling a like her life was some sort of bad movie at the minute. Though, the way Sam had accepted her apology still had her a little stunned. She’d never forgive herself for what happened, so how was it that he – the one she’d hurt – managed to forgive her? Sam was too good for her; he deserved much better than the slushied, stupid blonde that was Quinn Fabray. She knew that much, but her feelings for him would never go away no matter what she did, she also knew that too. It was actually like one of those tragic romance films, but the only difference was that this was actually happening and wasn’t a figure of someone’s imagination.
That’s when she heard him speak and it hit her like a brickwall. Quinn wanted to be upset by what he said, but she couldn’t deny that she agreed with him. “Why aren’t we talking about this?” The other blonde had said, but although it was kind of hurtful it didn’t hurt. She did agree with him, the blonde had been working so hard to try and cover up her emotions for him that she’d never actually talked about it. Maybe that was their problem, look at last year. She was working so hard to deny she had any feelings for Finn and was determined to not talk about it, that when they did actually kiss she’d just got carried away. Then, Sam tried to explain why he’d said it she came back to reality and looked up at him again.
“It’s okay,” Quinn muttered, thinking about it herself. “I think I agree...” She said, truthfully. Maybe it’d be good for them to just talk, maybe it would help get rid of the awkwardness that she felt with him. It was better to try, after all she hated the feeling of awkwardness that was in the room earlier and definitely did not want it to return. So, trying it would be better than doing absolutely nothing at all...right?

Sam wasn't sure why he was surprised that Quinn actually agreed with him, that they weren't actually talking about this. He wasn't sure if actually going through with this would be good for them or not, but perhaps it would help to evaporate some of the tension. Sam hated having this communication block between them; it made him feel even more stupid for having left things off where they were. Why hadn't he tried to fix things between them rather than just running off with Santana? He couldn't remember, and it only hurt his head to try. He supposed there was nothing to do now other than start at the beginning.
"What happened?" Sam asked, his eyes scanning the room. "I mean, I know what happened, but I don't know your side of it. I only know what I saw." He figured this was probably a good building block to start from. After all, there were two sides to every story, and at the time, he had been too blinded by anger to want to listen to what Quinn had to say about the situation. Resulting in what they had now - this strained something, this relationship where you see each other in the hallway and don't say anything to them, only think, "Hey, we had something once, didn't we?" Sam didn't like what they had now. He was a friendly guy who didn't want to be caught up in bad relaitonships like that. Things between his parents were bad enough as they were, and he never wanted to end up with a friendship or relationship that seemed like that - seemed difficult. Sam didn't deal with bumps in the road well, after all.
This would be a good lesson for him. Learning how to get over these roadblocks in his relationships....it would do him some good, or at least he thought so. Sam just hoped that whatever little spark might have been left after all the chaos of last year had still survived this long, because waiting for Quinn to respond and just watching her, all he could think of was why he had been drawn to her in the first place.
